Object & Deliverables
The Region L1 black spruce breeding program involves Millar Western Forest Products Ltd. (managing partner), West Fraser Hinton Wood Products, and ANC Timber Ltd. It follows, and benefits from, an earlier pilot program by the Alberta Land and Forest Service.
The program goal is to provide a secure source of high quality black spruce seed for reforestation programs within Region L1 breeding region. The primary objectives are to provide sufficient high quality material for reforestation; ensure maximum flexibility for future breeding cycles to accommodate potential changes in program objectives arising from unforeseen economic, industrial, political climatic or biological changes; and maintain genetic diversity and long-term adaptive capability.
Trees for this orchard were selected on the basis of superiority in stem form, crown shape, stem taper, branching characteristics, self-pruning, general health and vigour, and growth rate.
The yield from this orchard since its first cone crop in 2007 to 2016 was 90 hl of cones, yielding 27.8 kg of seed.
