Object & Deliverables
Assessing the mid-term timber supply concerns related to MPB requires both foresight and a commitment to act. Protecting advanced regeneration and mature non-pine trees will provide merchantable sized trees sooner than a clear-cut and plant strategy. This is a unique opportunity for silviculture. It is essential to ensure that scarce resources are focused on the mitigation measures which are most effective and appropriate for reducing supply issues; either by controlling beetle populations or reducing rotation length. In both cases, silviculture will be a useful tool in promoting a diverse and long-term sustainable fibre supply.
Deliverables included:
- a summary of the potential MPB outbreak impact
- an Opportunities matrix that lists and evaluates the potential silviculture mitigation options
- an Opportunities matrix that lists and evaluates other potential fibre sources
- a review of the literature available on silviculture practices associated with a MPB outbreak
