The ultimate purpose of this Project was the eventual production of superior quality White/Engelmann Spruce tree seed from high elevation sites.
Objectives included collection of scions from twenty-four superior quality trees, and grafting of these scions to potted rootstalk.
During February & March of 2000, twenty-four superior parent trees were selected and scion material collected – from high elevation sites in the southern Alberta foothills. These scions were shipped to a Grande Prairie Nursery where the grafting was carried out (overall success was an average of 28% and ranged from 0% to 82%). The grafted stock will be maintained in a secure location and continually cared for until such time as it can be outplanted in a suitable Seed Orchard.
