Object & Deliverables
This project consists of a literature review to compile and analyze existing data on breeding bird phenology in the boreal forest, and the potential impacts of timber harvesting on a variety of bird species.
Final Report
The final report, titled “Breeding Bird Nesting Phenology and Implications for Timber Harvest and Contravention of the Migratory Birds Convention Act” was submitted by Douglas M. Collister , URSUS Ecosystem Management, July 2005
The recommendation was that timber harvest operations should not commence between April 1 and July 31 (or August 15), in order to protect bird species that might ne nesting during that time frame. This would avoid destroying nests and eggs, and allow the young to fledge and become capable of moving away on their own from any disturbance.
