In January 2000, Alpha Wildlife Research and Management Ltd. carried out a 70.5 km inventory study of furbearers within Weyerhaeuser’s Edson Forest Management Area. A total of 1,759 furbearer tracks were recorded with snowshoe hare (65.8%), red squirrel (28.3%) and fishers (2.4%) being the most frequent species recorded. Short-tailed weasel (21), marten (14), lynx (12), coyote (9), wolf (4), and cougar (2) tracks were also recorded. Forest species utilized habitats that provided cover and generally avoided habitats that did not. Most marten tracks were found in mature or old forests. Fishers and red squirrels were found in habitats that provided more structural complexity. Short-tailed weasels and canids were found in all forest types. The final report was submitted by Gilbert Proulx of Alpha Wildlife Research and Management Ltd. In October 2000, entitled “Occurrence of furbearers in Weyerhaeuser’s Edson Forest Management Area”.
