This Project was undertaken for the purpose of reducing the threat of forest damage from mountain pine beetles. Selected trees located with in the Willmore Wilderness Area were baited for Dendroctonus ponderosae. The trees were then revisited and infected trees were cut, bucked, and burned. Mountain pine beetles can increase in population in epidemic proportions in a relatively short period of time. The monitoring of incursions from west of the Rocky Mountains, and following up with aggressive control measures play a vital role in maintaining the overall health of Alberta’s forests.
