This Project focused on studying the effects of fertilization on seedling growth at the time of planting. White spruce seedlings were planted with BIO-PAK fertilizer bags and compared to those planted without the treatment (control). During the next three years, data were collected for total height, height increment, basal caliper and seedling condition. The results indicate that the application of fertilizer at the time of planting had no benefit on the rate of survival but fertilized seedlings became established sooner and had a more vigorous growth rate. The Project also determined that further research is required to determine whether fertilizer packs could give seedlings a better chance of meeting Free-to-Grow requirements.
